Desert parks are a bulletin sport

Keira’s closures thread names the SA habit: desert parks bulletin first, Parks Australia if a Commonwealth park is involved, then a phone call if the HTML looks stale. That order lives on this leaf.

South Australia’s desert parks — the public names people use when they mean Simpson-adjacent travel, Witjira, Innamincka country, and related outback parks — publish conditions that change with wind, flood, and temperature. We will not tell you a dune section is open. We will tell you to read the bulletin the morning you roll, not the month you daydreamed. A wind event has closed dune travel in living memory after people had already packed. That is why the morning check exists.

Parks Australia appears when a Commonwealth park is on the itinerary. Do not skip it because you already opened a state page.

Other SA classrooms

Ikara–Flinders Ranges and nearby public roads are a touring and formed-track conversation with park pages, heat, and wildlife. They are not automatically a desert-parks dune week. Confirm the park you named.

Gawler Ranges and other west-of-Flinders public parks are another formed and rocky classroom. Same rule: official page, then humility.

Coastal SA — Coorong-adjacent and other beaches — is a vehicle-access and tide conversation only where it is published. Read beach driving. Do not invent a right to drive a dune because you can see the sea.

Long formed outback roads and highway-to-dirt connectors still punish optimism: corrugations, fuel spacing, and a 4 pm kangaroo shift. Read outback driving and tyre pressures.

Nullarbor-adjacent and far-west SA travel is often more highway and wind than dune, until it is not. Small-town fuel, weather, and wildlife still win. If a side trip enters a park, open that park’s page. If it enters a station, a pin is not permission — the same sentence as NT travel.

A desert-parks week, without a brochure

People plan Simpson-adjacent weeks from South Australia because the desert parks system is the adult paperwork for several of those public parks. We will not invent a pass price, a start date, or a dune that is open. We will say:

• Read the desert parks bulletin the morning you roll, then again if the wind comes up.
• Treat Parks Australia as a second tab when a Commonwealth park is on the line.
• Walk a dune crest you cannot see the exit of. If you cannot walk it, think twice.
• Stay on the used legal line. A pretty unused line is how vegetation dies. Tread lightly.
• Carry water, practised tyre repair, and rated recovery you can reach. Packing. Recovery basics.
• Turn around while you still can. A shortened week is a successful week.

Desert parks in convoy still need a brief and spectator distance if someone buries a wheel. Sand recoveries are usually pressure and line mistakes. If you travel with a second vehicle, brief the strap before the first dune, not after the first burial. If you travel alone, a practised winch is still a later tool, not a personality — and a jewellery winch is not a plan. Winching belongs in a paddock first.

Corrugations on the formed roads that lead into desert parks are a speed and pressure conversation. Powder over a hard base rattles unrated hitches. Air down a little when the surface goes to talc, then air up before rocky approaches — as a conversation with the tyre, not as a number we invent. Read tyre pressures again the night before you roll.

How to post an SA week

On trip reports, include the bulletin you checked and whether a section had closed. Do not invent a crossing. Do not publish a #1 tyre for the east-west corrugations. The tracks and parks board wants the order of operations. The board wants the turn-around.

Sibling leaves: Northern Territory and Queensland if the desert week crosses a border; Western Australia if you are heading toward Nullarbor-adjacent or WA parks; New South Wales if the dirt is actually a forest weekend you are comparing to a dune week.

What we will not specify

We will not publish a desert parks pass price. We will not list open dunes. We will not give a Simpson start date. We will not rank a recovery board.
